Basement Insulation.

With heating, cooling, and utility costs soaring, it's becoming increasingly important to do whatever you can to invest in your home's long-term energy efficiency. Committing to a top-of-the-line basement finishing now will establish a solid foundation of savings and a high quality of living for the home in the long term. By properly insulating the basement walls, windows, and floor, you'll not only make the finished area easier to heat and cool, it will also create a more comfortable environment in that living space.

These different elements are all rated using a comprehensive system known as the "R" rating.

The R-Insulation Rating

R-1 50% R-2 75% R-3 87.5% R-4 93.75% R-5 96.875% R-6 98.4375% R-7 99.21875% R-8 99.60938% R-9 99.80469% R-10 99.90234% R-11 99.95117% R-12 99.97559% R-13 99.98779% R-14 99.9939% R-15 99.99695% R-16 99.99847%

In the home improvement industry, the quality and effectiveness of insulation is rated by a rating system called the R-Insulation Rating. The lowest R-insulation rating, R-1, reflects back 50% of all heat reaching it. As the R rating increases each step, it becomes 50% closer to reflecting all heat than the previous rating- the higher the rating, the better. Therefore, a building material with an R-rating of 2 will send back 75% of all heat, where one with a rating of 3 will send back 87.5%, and so on.

The R-insulation can be compromised by two major factors. One is that a basement walls' R-Insulation rating is only applicable if there is a long, unbroken sheet of insulation with no openings to allow cold to stream through. Another factor is the long-term quality of the insulation. Insulation that is damp, moldy, or rotting will have a fraction of the insulation rating of other materials. Additionally, some building materials use a very reliable insulation rating but use metal framing, which lowers its overall R rating.
